How to keep your computer healthy
Mostly, problems in Operating System causes bad performance of your machine. Following are the ways to boost performance of your machine:
1. Get a good Anti-virus:
A good Anti-virus protects your operating system from malware, spyware and other viruses. There are many anti-virus products available in the market both paid and unpaid which often makes a user confused. Here are some good anti-virus products:
- Microsoft Security Essentials: Download (free)
- Avast: Download (trial)
- Norton: Download (trial)
- Kaspersky: Download (trial)
- Avira: Download (free)
- Panda: Download (free)
Among these, most of the people trusts Avast. But I will recommend you Microsoft Security Essentials. If you are using Windows 8 then you don't need to install any anti-virus product since it already contains Microsoft Security Essentials.
2. Keep your Desktop Clean:
Avoid storing unnecessary files and folders on your desktop. It effects the overall performance and increases the start-up time of Operating System.
3. Defragment your Hard Disk Drive:
If you are using Windows Vista, 7 or 8, then you don't need to worry about it because defragmentation is automatically done in these Operating Systems.
For Windows XP:
Step-1: Open Start Menu
Step-2: Goto All Programs
Step 3: Select Administrative tools
Step-4: Select Defragment and Optimize Drive
4. Clean Registry:
A registry file is just like a register on which every record is written. Anything you do on your computer is written in these registry files which effects the performance of Operating System therefore you have to delete these files. Deleting registry files manually is a complex work, so use a software instead. I recommend using
Ccleaner: Download (free)
Ccleaner: Download (free)
5. Avoid visiting Suspicious Webpages:
Once you have installed an anti-virus software, it will alarm you if you're trying to visit any suspicious page. However, you can visit that page even if anti-virus software is alarming you but try not to do so.
6. Avoid Downloading Unknown Files:
An easy way of transferring viruses into your computer is through download-able files. Usually malware and spyware are contained in torrents and files with .exe extension. Remember, never download a file with an unknown or ambiguous name.
Hackers are working day and night, inventing new ways to breach the cyber security and programmers are doing their jobs, making cyber security better. This is why almost after few months, a new update is available which has the ability to defend your computer against new threats. Always install updates of your anti-virus product.
Most of the people ignore the notification about updating their anti-virus.
